VPN settings (for Windows 7)

How to set up Windows 7 devices to connect an L2TP VPN to the Pickering network

If you haven't used VPN at Pickering before, and if you have not done so already, make IT aware that you want to use a VPN connection into the Pickering network as they have to set up permissions on the network for you first.

Open Start Menu > Control Panel, click on Network and Internet, click on View network status and tasks.

...and select Set up a new connection or network

In the Set up a connection or network pop-up window

...and select Connect to a workplace (Set up a dial-up or VPN connection to your workplace).

...Select Use my Internet connection (VPN), in the Connect to a workspace dialog window.

In the Connect to a Workplace dialog box, enter:

  • Internet address: Enter the public IP address 81.145.47.199
  • Destination name: Optionally enter a name for the VPN connection such as Pickering VPN

Choose "Don't connect now; just set it up so that I can connect later" option.

Click Next.

Enter your user credentials (Pickering network log on details), and click Create.

Your Pickering network username credentials are either in the format pickering\firstname.lastname or can be pickering\firstname

Close Wizard.

Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Networking and Sharing Center and click Change Adapter Settings

In Network Connections window, right click on the new VPN connection settings and choose Properties

In the General tab, verify that the public IP address is 81.145.47.199

Pickering's IP Address is 81.145.47.199

In the Options tab, make sure "Include Windows logon domain" is unchecked

In the " Security" tab, choose "Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec)".

Then, check "Unencrypted password (PAP)"

uncheck all other protocols.

Click on " Advanced settings".

In Advanced Properties dialog box, choose "Use preshared key for authentication" and enter the preshared key that you have requested from IT.

The pre-shared key is known only to the IT team for security and they can help with entering in this information.  Please contact them for assistance.

Click OK.

Back at the Network Connections window, right-click on the VPN connection and click Connect

Verify your user name and click Connect.

Congratulations, your VPN connection is now connected.

You are done. Great job!
